Portugal shocked Fiji by beating them 24-23 to secure a historic Rugby World Cup win, their first ever. After a cagey first half, seeing both teams just score a penalty each, it went to the wire as Fiji made it 23-17 with 4 minutes to go. Then, Portugal sneaked through a try and conversion in the 80th minute to snatch the win. Fiji still qualified for the quarter-finals but all the praise goes to Portugal.
“It’s incredible, unbelievable. They always find resources I never expect and to score that last try like that is unbelievable. For four years, they always surprise me, I’m so lucky to train this team and for this this to be my final match is incredible”
Portugal coach, Patrice Lagisquet
