The beautiful game is played on a hard court and it’s called futsal. Here are three facts about the sport:
- Futsal was created by Juan Carlos Ceriani in Uruguay in 1930, the same year the national soccer team hosted and won the inaugural FIFA World Cup.
- Since the first FIFA Futsal World Cup (men’s), played in 1989, there have been 9 Futsal World Cups. Brazil have won the most with 5 and lost only 4 matches in 9 competitions
- Notably, there is still no FIFA Fustal World Cup for women. Instead, the Women’s Futsal World Tournament (started in 2010) is organised by national associations and the World Futsal Association.
