The actor Matthew Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing in Friends, sadly died yesterday from a suspected drowning. While people around the world mourn his passing, I came across a remarkable piece of media he was part of, and in the most unlikely of places.
NBA Hangtime was a basketball arcade game developed and released by Midway in 1996. According to NBA Jam (the book) on Twitter, Perry was such a big NBA Jam fan (and a basketball fan in general—he supported the Lakers), that he contacted Midway to appear in their next basketball game and they obliged. So if you enter your name as PERRY and use the number 3500 as your PIN, you can unlock him as a secret character. The above video shows this with the actor playing for the 76ers against the Grizzlies.
If anyone knows more about how this came about or the significance of the PIN, let me know in the comments!
