On this day in 1994, Maradona’s fourth goal against Greece at the 1994 FIFA World Cup produced one of the most infamous goal celebrations of all time. We all knew Maradona could be passionate—as any footballer could—but this one had a hidden backstory. It was to be his last goal for Argentina as he was later ejected from the tournament for failing a drugs test.
In my opinion, Marco Tardelli’s goal celebration in the 1982 final was more impassioned than this but you know how the media likes to embellish a moment, especially for Maradona and especially after what happened afterwards.
