Populous, the architects behind Yankee Stadium, Tigres UANL’s new stadium and the London Olympic Stadium, have completed the build of Beijing’s new ‘Ice Ribbon’ stadium for the Winter Olympics. The stadium will seat 12,000 spectators and is the only permanent venue of the Games.

Some key features include:

  • The ‘ice ribbon’ design is said to be ‘a symbol of Chinese cultural heritage that celebrates the elegance, precision, pace and dynamic of speed skating
  • The façade has 22 rotating light bands
  • The facility will hold winter festivals, sporting fixtures, public and private events after the Games

The new stadium will host the speed skating events and award fourteen gold medals, according to designboom.
