Friendly fire? Russia shoot at the wrong hoop vs. Spain in the FIBA U19 Women's World Cup

It’s Russia vs. Spain in FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup and in the third quarter, the Russians went into a fugue-like state. You can see it all unfold below but here’s a brief summary:

  • Russia (in red) are playing right to left and Spain (in white), are playing right to left.
  • Russia attack the left hoop as normal but when one of their players steps out of bounds, the ball was awarded to Spain… except it wasn’t
  • Instead, a Russian player took the ball and inbounded it
  • The Russian team then proceeded to attack the wrong basket (ie. the one Spain should have been attacking) and score from the three line. Into their own basket.

After all the confusion and consultation, the 3 points were awarded to Spain.
