England went the long way round to book their place in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 after a penalty shootout victory against Switzerland. The match ended 1–1 with goals from Breel Embolo (75) and Bukayo Saka (80) and it was Manuel Akanji who missed his penalty for the Swiss. For England, it was a vast improvement on their previous matches, even if it felt like deja vu, going 1–0 down and having to rally back.
Their composure in the shootout was sublime and so different to previous years where you could see the nerves. Saka was easily the man of the match and his redemption arc is sweet like honey. Shout out to Trent Alexander-Arnold for scoring the winning penalty as well, another man on a mission.
England will play the Netherlands next after their 2–1 win against Turkey.
