You only sink when you’re winning.
When I think of Latvian football, I think of individual footballers like Marian Pahars, Vitalijs Astafjevs, Igors Stepanovs, and Andrejs Štolcers (and the fact that the national team qualified for Euro 2004). But until I watched Route None’s video on the country’s top flight, I had no idea their clubs were dropping like flies.
In the video, Route None discusses the various ways that the Virslīga champions had to fold and it all stems from money—mismanagement, corrupt owners, betting scandals, and dwindling ticket revenue. I wonder what the future holds (and I hope it doesn’t involve sports betting or oil money).
