There’s something we didn’t see coming. Jessica Bouzas Maneiro knocked out the reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets today, 6–4 6–2. The Spaniard played brilliantly, taking all 5 of her break points and winning 77% on her first serve compared to Vondrousova’s 55%.
For Vondrousova, it’s another entry in the history books but for the wrong reasons: she’s only the second defending champion to lose in the first round after Steffi Graf who lose to Lori McNeil in 1994.
