[meme voice] Do a Misty flip!
I heard the phrase “misty 900” just now while watching the men’s freeski halfpipe qualifying at Milano Cortina 2026 and thought the misty part sounded cool. So I looked it up and here’s how you do it on your skis (and an accompanying blog post).
While the 900 describes the rotation (you’re rotating 900° in the air) but the misty part comes from a trick called the misty flip, popularised by and mostly attributed to snowboarder Ali Goulet as its originator. In episode 118 of The Bomb Hole, he explained how it came about and where the name came from:
[…] where the name came from is that Whitey [Rob McConnaughy] had a sequence it went into Blunt Magazine and no one was doing that so they’re like well what do you call it and I’m like ‘oh, what am I going to call it? I’m not going to call it like a goulet flip or something’.
