FA Cup holders Crystal Palace knocked out by non-league Macclesfield

Palace in Blunderland

Well, nobody saw that coming. After a monumentous FA Cup win last season, Crystal Palace found themselves at the opposite end against National League North side Macclesfield FC.

The non-league outfit beat Palace 2–1 with goals from captain Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts and Palaces lone goal from Yéremy Pino in the 90th minute.

Some history-making stats:

  • Macclesfield’s win was the first time that a club from the 6th tier of English football had beaten a club from the Premier League
  • Crystal Palace were also the first defending champions to lose to a non-league team. And guess who the last non-league team was to do it? Crystal Palace! They beat Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1909
  • The gap between the clubs in league placings were 117 positions, making it the biggest upset in those terms.
