The past few weeks were phenomenal. The best of my life. I was back with Lizi, results were going my way, and I was living in Barcelona. I often pinched myself at the training ground to make sure I wasn’t dreaming, much to the puzzlement of the players. As we prepared for our league match against Levante, I watched some of our match highlights from the last couple of months.

Espanyol vs Celta Vigo (La Liga)

Espanyol vs Celta Vigo (La Liga)

It’s a tired cliché but it really was a game of two halves. Celta went 2-0 before we’d reached the half-hour mark through Nemanja Radoja and Maximiliano Gómez. Pau López was having a mare, ending the match with a pass completion of 16.7%. Fortunately, my front line was on hand to save the day. Morillas grabbed a cheap tap-in on 51 minutes to bring it back to 2-1 and a bullet header from Morena restored parity. The match was pretty even but Celta were better where it mattered – passing, headers, and tackles.

Espanyol vs Dunav Ruse (Europa League Qualifying Playoff 2nd Leg)

We consolidated the first leg rout with a comfortable 2-0 win. Caricol was out for 3 weeks with strained knee ligaments. Darder got MOTM.

Second game in a row we conceded two but this time we scored more. Morillas made it three goals in three consecutive games with a 19th minute penalty but Héctor Moreno equalised a minute later. Darder made it 2-1 after 57 minutes but Prieto scored a “nice” goal after 69 minutes. Gerard Moreno propped up with the winner 3 minutes later and that’s how it stayed.

Espanyol vs Östersund (Europa League 2nd Round 1st Leg)

We got a bye into the second round and made the most of it with a 4-0 win. Morillas made it 4 in 4 with a 3rd minute penalty, Navarro scored a brace and Melendo completed the stonking.

I was starting to get the hang of this Spanish football malarkey. Unbeaten in 4 and goals aplenty. It was clear the defence needed some improving, particularly in the league but it was early days. I even mustered a laugh in a few press conferences and the fans seemed to be warming to me ever-so-slightly. Yeah, things were okay.
